Self-focussed optical structures in a nematic liquid crystal

چکیده
In recent experiments investigating the nonlinear interaction between light and nematic liquid crystals, Braun et al. (1993) observed complex optical beam structures that were generated by the strong self-focussing of laser light. For a simplified partial differential equation (PDE) model which captures the essential coupling between optical refraction and nematic deformation, we demonstrate two of the experimentally observed features undulation andfilamentation. For the mathematical analysis, we develop a novel asymptotic representation for this strongly coupled nonlinear system which exploits the natural separation of scales at which these optical structures are created by the self-focussing process. This approach uses geometrical optics, paraxial optics, and scale-separation to identify tractable outer and inner problems. The outer problem describes the undulation of the beam, and is given by a free-boundary problem for the distortion of the nematic crystal. The inner problem describes the filamentation of the beam, and is given by a nonlocal-nonlinear Schr6dinger (NLS) equation for evolution of the light wave. For the outer problem, we demonstrate analytically the existence of small amplitude undulations of the beam. Large amplitude undulations are studied numerically. For the inner problem, waveguide modes are constructed. Simulations of the nonlocal NLS show that the interaction of these modes generates filamentary beam structures. Thus the PDE model, when reduced asymptotically into two decoupled systems at two distinct spatial scales, produces a theoretical corroboration of the unusual nonlinear optical behavior of undulation, as well as a nonlinear mechanism for filamentation.

Director Structures in a Chiral Nematic Slab: Threshold Field and Pitch Variations
Abstract The liquid crystal director distribution is determined for a confined chiral nematic slab. The molecular director distribution of the field-controlled chiral nematic slab is directly calculated. The director profiles for the tilt and the twist angles, under different applied fields, are calculated in the slab with weak boundary conditions. Then, the dependence of the threshold field on...
متن کاملPolarizational nonlinear optical response of photonic structures with a liquid crystal defect.
We demonstrate experimentally that a one-dimensional photonic crystal with a homeotropic nematic liquid crystal defect behaves as a polarization-sensitive nonlinear all-optical device. We study statics and dynamics of the nonlinear optical response for linearly and circularly polarized beams and show enhanced light sensitivity and polarization self-modulation effects.

It has been predicted, but never confirmed, that colloidal particles in a nematic liquid crystal could be self-assembled by delocalized topological defects and entangled disclinations. We show experimentally and theoretically that colloidal dimers and 1D structures bound by entangled topological defect loops can indeed be created by locally thermally quenching a thin layer of the nematic liquid...
متن کاملInteraction of nematicons in a bias-free liquid crystal cell
We study experimentally the propagation dynamics and interaction of spatial optical solitons in a bias-free cell filled with nematic liquid crystals. We reveal and measure long-range effects due to the cell boundaries for a single nematicon as well as for the interacting in-phase and out-of-phase nematicons. We discuss the effect of initial beam focusing and relative input angle on the interact...
متن کاملOptical tuning of silicon photonic structures with nematic liquid crystal claddings.
An analysis of and experimental demonstration of active optical tuning of silicon strip waveguides with methyl red doped nematic liquid crystal claddings is presented. Under low-power irradiation by polarized light, the reorientation of the nematic, the resulting index change, and phase shift produce a tuning range of 5.6 nm for the microresonator resonances.
